February 28, 2024 - Somerset County Republican Chair Tim Howes today announced his intention to seek and serve a third term as Chair. Chairman Howes was elected unanimously in 2020, and re-elected with 91% of the vote in 2022.
“I am proud of this organization’s accomplishments over the past four years. We have partnered with the local organizations to post a net gain of twelve seats at the local level from 2021 through 2023. As a result, more than seventy percent of the county is governed by Republican municipal government,” said Howes.
“We have brought this organization and campaign into the digital age, utilizing more avenues of reaching voters than ever before, including an innovative VBM chase program. Outreach to the long-neglected affinity groups that swing our county’s elections has blossomed in the past four years. In 2022, our fundraising was among the top Republican county organizations in the state. We have assembled an election law “dream team” to ensure fair and honest elections. As a result, we have outperformed our registration deficit each year, and played key roles in electing Tom Kean to Congress and re-electing our LD-21 and LD-23 legislators.
“While holding an executive committee title, my opponent has had little to do with the operations of this organization. Having had high hopes when I asked her to serve, I was disappointed when she chose not to be involved in the county campaign during her first general election on the executive committee. She then offered to start helping with fundraising, but that initial offer of assistance turned out to be merely a ruse to obtain the municipal chairs list to start campaigning for County Chair a year and a half prior to the election. Republican candidates on the ballot found this transparent power play an unfortunate distraction from their campaigns.
“Many Republicans are asking this question: What did my opponent do in two years as Vice Chair to earn the promotion to County Chair?
“The team of individuals who put in the work of running this organization and electing Somerset County Republicans will remain focused on having a successful fundraiser tonight, a fair and open convention on Tuesday, and launching the GOP Somerset County Commissioner campaign next week.”
